What is Affiliate Marketing?

What is real affiliate marketing? The question is best answered by telling you what it is not. Real affiliate marketing is not choosing a product or a service, and joining some social network and trying to get people to buy.

The web is a content driven medium. People are in search of websites laden with information. Information that is directly related to what they are are interested in or trying to learn about. Affiliate marketing is an intricate process in which you provide people with the information that they are looking for, and present it such a way that they will be enticed to perhaps click-through your links and make a purchase.

It still isn't that simple however. It's much more involved than even that, but it's not by any means difficult. Affiliate marketing is competitive to be sure, but with a little know-how and some good old elbow grease can take you a long way.

The first thing you need to learn, is that having your own website is the only way you are going to succeed in business online. Social networking is in no way, shape or form affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing likewise is not social networking.

That's the number one problem that so many people fail online. It's through no fault of their own, because they don't know, but if you want to succeed in affiliate marketing then you had better apply yourself and figure out that buying into these so-called make a ton of money programs for just a few bucks is not going to cut it. What they fail to tell you is how to properly market yourself so that you can build a network to start with. I'm sorry folks, but having a profile on AllStar Marketing, or Yuwie or any of those other sites is not going to cut it.

You absolutely have to have reputable hosting from a company like My Webhosting, that can guarantee your website is going to be there when people do find it, and you have to have a website that gives them a reason to keep coming back. You have to keep working that website, adding new content, optimizing it and so on to keep them coming back for more. Whether you are involved in affiliate marketing, or marketing your own products and services, this is true.

You absolutely positively have to have a content driven medium which will ultimately bring people to your website through the search engines, or advertising, or preferrably a combination of both. The first thing that smacks them in the face has to be the content they are looking for. In this case I would imagine that to be information.

I'll guarantee you, that if the first thing they see on your website is a sales pitch, you've lost them already. Affiliate marketing or any kind of marketing for that matter is about giving people what they want, and the rest will fall into place.
